Coffee Panna Cotta

Coffee Panna Cotta - Easy Meal Recipe

Coffee panna cotta is one of those recipes that stirs up fond memories. There’s something about the silky texture and the deep flavor of coffee that feels both luxurious and comforting. I’ve whipped up this dish countless times, and it never fails to amaze guests. What’s great about it? It looks gourmet, yet it's incredibly easy to make. You can prepare it ahead of time, which takes the pressure off when entertaining.
First, let’s talk about the ingredients I love to use. For me, selecting the best components is essential. I opt for full-fat dairy, as it yields a creamier texture. Instant coffee granules provide that lovely coffee kick without complicating the process. Every element works harmoniously to create a dessert that's not overly sweet but just enough to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Ingredients

  • 15g instant coffee granules or instant espresso powder for deeper intensity
  • 360ml heavy thickened
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract to elevate flavor
  • 360ml whole milk full cream for best flavor
  • 80g superfine caster sugar balance sweetness
  • A small pinch of fine sea salt to enhance the coffee flavor
Optional:
  • Espresso powder for dusting or incorporating into whipped cream
  • 20g icing sugar for sweetness in whipped cream
  • 120ml chilled thickened cream minimum 30% fat content for a luscious topping

Method

  1. Let’s roll up our sleeves! Making this dessert is a breeze. Follow these steps closely:
Step 1: Bloom the Gelatin
  1. Start by blooming the gelatin. In a small bowl, combine 2 teaspoons of powdered gelatin with 1 tablespoon of cold water. Stir gently and set aside for about 5-10 minutes. The gelatin needs to absorb water and become soft.
Step 2: Prepare the Coffee Mixture
  1. Next, you’ll create a coffee mixture. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the heavy cream, whole milk, and sugar. Stir it occasionally to dissolve the sugar completely. Once you start to see steam rising, but the mixture isn’t boiling yet, add the instant coffee granules and a pinch of sea salt. Stir until dissolved. This step infuses your cream with the deep, rich flavor of coffee.
Step 3: Incorporate the Gelatin
  1. Now, it’s time to bring the gelatin into the mix. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Add the bloomed gelatin to the warm coffee mixture. Stir continuously until the gelatin dissolves completely. You want that smooth texture that panna cotta is known for!
Step 4: Add Vanilla Extract
  1. Now, add 1/2 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract for that extra layer of flavor. Stir again, letting the warmth release the vanilla’s full potential.
Step 5: Pour into Molds
  1. Carefully pour the mixture into your chosen molds. Silicone molds work wonderfully because they make removing the panna cotta a breeze. You can also use small ramekins if you prefer. Leave a little space at the top to allow for the slightest expansion.
Step 6: Chill
  1. Once you’ve poured the mixture into molds, let them cool on the countertop for a few minutes. Then, cover them with plastic wrap and place them in the refrigerator. Let them chill for at least 4 hours, or overnight if you can manage the wait.
Step 7: Prepare the Whipped Cream (Optional)
  1. While you’re waiting, you might want to prepare the whipped cream topping. In a bowl, combine the chilled thickened cream with the icing sugar. Beat it with a whisk or an electric mixer until soft peaks form. If you’d like, fold in a touch of espresso powder for that added coffee essence.
Step 8: Serve
  1. When you're ready to serve, carefully release the panna cotta from the molds by dipping them briefly in warm water. Turn them out onto plates, and top generously with whipped cream and a dusting of espresso powder. Voilà! You have a restaurant-worthy coffee panna cotta.

Notes

Let’s take a closer look at some of the key ingredients and their roles:
  • Powdered Gelatin: This is critical for creating that luscious, wobbly texture. It’s flavorless but is the backbone of this dessert.
  • Instant Coffee Granules: These little powerhouses deliver that bold coffee flavor without complicating your process. Choose espresso powder for a richer taste.
  • Heavy Cream: This is where the magic happens. The higher fat content contributes to the creaminess and richness.
  • Whole Milk: Adds volume and balances the richness of the cream. It's essential for achieving that perfect texture.
  • Superfine Caster Sugar: This dissolves easily, ensuring smoothness. It sweetens without creating a gritty texture.
Fine Sea Salt: A small pinch enhances the flavors beautifully and brings the coffee to life.
